Locality Study – GP Surgery Data – NEW!

May 14, 2009

Doing your locality study at the moment? Good news! We have added a new resource to the Locality folder in Blackboard. You can search it online by entering the name of your local GP surgery and it will produce charts comparing data on the prevelance of a range of diseases/conditions in that area with data for the local health board and the UK. It is based upon the data collected for the Quality and Outcomes Framework of the GP contract, and was produced by Gavin Jamie, a GP in Swindon who is interested in Health Informatics.

You will still need to try to collect data when you are on placement, but this should be a useful tool for you. Take a look at the site at: http://www.gpcontract.co.uk/

NHS Evidence launched

May 5, 2009

NHS Evidence, http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/ , has now been launched by NICE and will eventually replace the National Library of Health’s (NLH) webpages completely.  According to the new NHS Evidence website:

“The principle aim of the NHS Evidence service is to provide easy access to a comprehensive evidence base for everyone in health and social care who takes decisions about treatments or the use of resources – including clinicians, public health professionals, commissioners and service managers – thus improving health and patient care. It will build on NICE’s significant international reputation for developing high quality evidence-based guidance. It provides access to a range of information types, including primary research literature, practical implementation tools, guidelines and policy documents”

You will notice that there is a simple search box.  There is a link for Search Help if you need it.  A keyword search will probably give you a large result, however the side navigation will help you filter your search returns to something more relevant to you.

Many of us in class were fans of the Specialist Libraries in the NLH, and these are still searchable.  When going to the NHS Evidence website, you will see a Conduct a Specialist Search drop-down menu where you can search the specialist collections.

Please be aware that the books and journals are still NHS England Athens only – we will not have an account in Wales.  Make note of the citation, and then look for it in the University Library’s catalogue to see if we have the journal or book you need.
