SCIE (Social Care Institute for Excellence) have produced a new website for nurses and others working with people with dementia – SCIE Dementia Gateway. Given recent reports about the number of patients in hospitals who suffer from dementia, this is a timely and very useful resource. The contents cover five main themes: getting to know the person with dementia, eating well, difficult situations, keeping occupied and the environment. Each theme includes practical tips, a learning activity and a additional resources. Resources include links to videos on dementia and an e-learning programme.

“Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) contains a wide range of maternity information which has been published annually since 2000-01. The publication includes details of all births taking place in NHS hospitals (in England) excluding home births and those taking place in independent sector hospitals. This includes a wide range of information such as details of how the baby was born (method of delivery), complications, birth weight and gestation.” The full report is available to download.

The health management specialist collection (NHS Evidence) has produced its annual update on NHS system reform, which includes the latest knowledge published in the previous year. Following extensive searches, the site now brings together the latest knowledge on patient choice, commissioning, alternative providers, foundation trusts, payment by results and regulation published in the past year.

l am afraid that we are experiencing problems accessing Ovid resources such as Midirs and the British Nursing Index (BNI) at the moment. The issue has been reported and hopefully will be resolved soon. It is possible to access these databases using the method below as an emergency measure.

•  Once you have logged in select ‘Ovid Online’ from the list of Resources displayed.

The Library currently has a trial of the Global Health database until the 15th November. To access the database from on-campus, please go to www.cabdirect.org and you can use the basic or advanced search.

Global Health is a selective database of 1.4 million records dedicated to public and international health and biological sciences. Many of the titles are unique and will not overlap other health databases such as PubMed (ie WHO documents). Please feel free to give the database a try, and send any feedback to medlib@swan.ac.uk .

I hope you were able to recharge your batteries during the summer break. A few things have changed, and will be still changing. in the Library since you went on break. Unfortunately, the Library is a bit of a construction site at the moment. There will be a redesign of the service desks and self-issue/return, as well as a refurbishment of the toilets (finally!), due to finish in the next few weeks. Here are a few essentials you may want to take note of:

- the Information Desk and IT Support Desk, as well as the Careers Desk, are temporarily relocated in the Study Hall.

- there is only one toilet available, and that is the disabled toilet behind the Issue Desk. The closest toilets are located in the Kier Hardy or Taliesan building.

-by the end of September their should be a new combined Issue/IT/Careers Desk and Information Desk in the Central Hall as you walk in. The current Issue Desk area (the first desk area as you enter the library) will become an expanded Costa Coffee, and the old noisy coffee pod station will be removed from the Study Hall.

-The service desks will be closing earlier than last year. Please check the Library’s Opening Hours page for all the details – http://www.swan.ac.uk/lis/library/opening/

-and finally, the old self issue/return machines will be replaced by new ones, which eventually will also allow you to pay for fines as well as check-out, renew and return your books.
